The Dare

post-george-1961.jpg“One night—it must have been when I was about ten—five of my sisters and I were in the living room watching television and talking and laughing with two of our brothers. And brother George was not feeling well so he was upstairs sleeping. One of my sisters said we should paint George’s fingernails bright red, and my two brothers egged us on, daring us to go into his bedroom and paint them. Our brothers teased us—we were so scared, they said, because George might wake up and kick our ass. So, naturally, the six of us took our brothers up on the dare.”
